Crazy Parents

This one may be more for you parents out there although I encourage everyone to play along by considering this as it pertains to yourself. Today’s question asks you to share something silly or funny you’ve done with (to?) your child.

For instance, today’s photo comes from a trip to Idaho Melinda, Chloe and I took in 1994. Chloe was a toddler, as you may be able to tell, and the house at which we were staying had some beautiful landscaping that included this fountain. We put Chloe in the fountain and snapped a series of pictures, this being but one. We laughed and laughed.

Sometimes it’s hard to believe our children survive to adulthood.

Today’s Question: What’s a nutty thing you’ve done with your kid?

  1. Our nutty “aka” spontaneous event was deciding to give the girls “a ride to school”! Instead we headed north to Vancouver to check out the Winter Olympics! We were in awe with all we saw. We arrived parked and arrived in town by subway/train to find the Canadian Mounted Police positioned near the Olympic Torch!
We stood in the same line three different times. First to find out which events had available tickets and their cost, second time to verify the cost of tickets(unbelievable) and third time to purchase 4 tickets for the women’s ice skating event. We walked past those offering tickets at greatly reduced prices yet we knew the tickets we held were invaluable in many different ways! We watched from 4 rows back from the ice. We could hear the scrape of their blades and their breath as they skated by. Other Olympic athletes sat in surrounding seats in support of their friends. We returned home late that evening inspired. Needless to say the excitement and energy surrounding the day was unforgettable!

  2. No children, but in the realm of goofy pictures, one year I was doing a unit on communication with my third graders. As part of the unit, we were doing “Matthew Brady Photo Shoots” and the kids developed characters and then used the costume pieces I collected to pose as their characters. One boy was adamant that he had to have a stovepipe hat. I scrounged around and called “my sources” and borrowed one for him. It was so large that it completely covered his head and settled on his shoulders. Luckily, he let me snap a picture of him like that. Every now and then I find the photo again and just laugh out loud. Really – not lol but really laugh!

  3. When our kids were about six and twelve respectively we got very heavily involved in winter mountaineering. We climbed several of the 4,000′ mountains of New England, backpacking our food, tents and sleeping bags, with snowshoes strapped on the packs (although we never had to use them). Once in a great while we saw a father/son combo on the mountains.

It was not too long before our daughter rebelled! She was the only one of us who was very cold natured and claimed she could not sleep beause she was never warm in her sleeping bag. We slept with hats on our heads and long johns on and sometimes sweatshirts, socks and gloves. To us it was an adventure, but I note that so far neither of our children have given the “wonderful” experience of winter backpacking in the mountains to their children!
