Odd Jobs – AM Radio DJ

That’s me on my 19th birthday. I’m sitting at the control board of KRXA Radio in Seward, Alaska, where I was working for most all of 1982. That’s right, when I was 19 years-old, a year out of high school, I was an AM radio deejay in a small town in Alaska.

KRXA played mainly Top 40 songs (and I swore then that I’d never again listen to “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” by Joan Jett). But every Saturday night I took control of the station to play an hour of the music I loved, what I called the Alternative Music Program. And get this — I’ve uploaded an episode that you can stream online!

Today’s Prompt: Tell about a job you had (and now recall fondly) when you were young.

  1. I picked strawberries in the berry fields of Whatcom County as a young teen, and although it was awfully hard work, I do look back on it fondly now. We’d compete to see who could pick the most pounds of berries in a day, and got to get on the bus for the ride home in order of “most” to “least.” Another kid always always always beat me, all summer long, except for one glorious day. We were both stunned when I got to be first on the bus that day. Never again (though I kept right on trying). Sure bumped our totals for the summer to have that competition, but for me, it mostly just gave me something to think about for all those hours of picking, under beating sun and drizzly rain. (If it poured, we didn’t go.)
