15 February 2013 : Groovy Girls

When we got back from our year in France, waiting for us was a CD I ordered of digitized family photos. I uploaded the images and have many times had a blast looking through them (I still need to get them organized).Groovy Girls

Today’s image is one of these photos and it really touches me. Here are Chloe and Ella from many years ago, playing in our eating area with their “Groovy Girls.” Both girls loved these dolls but I will forever link them to Chloe, who had several and could play with them for hours.

I hadn’t thought about these dolls for a long time but seeing this picture inspired me to do a quick online search. I discovered that the line is alive and well, complete with its own groovygirls.com domain.

For you parents, what toys did your kids love that they have outgrown? For that matter, what toys did YOU enjoy that you have outgrown? Are you sure??

14 February 2013 : Happy Valentine’s Day!

Yesterday I told you about Melinda’s and my “song.” Today I’m going to tell you a little more about that story. My Darlin, Darlin, Darlin

So about a year after Melinda laid out the rocks in our house (btw, they ended in our bedroom with three rocks saying “I love you” and another saying “Happy Birthday!”), Scott Garred, aka Super XX Man, was scheduled to play at a small venue in Seattle. I had recently contacted Scott through his website in an attempt to get all of his CDs. He was so friendly and responsive to my email messages that I got a little bold.

“Any chance you’d play ‘Collecting Rocks’ in Seattle and dedicate it to my wife and me?”

He did.

13 February 2013 : They’re Playing Our Song

Is there a song that you and your partner identify as “yours?” For Melinda and me, we kinda-sorta used to say it was the classic “Blue Moon” since we were married on a blue moon.Collecting Rocks But it never really stuck.

A few years ago we both found ourselves drawn to a song called “Collecting Rocks” by a somewhat unknown musician who goes by the name Super XX Man. The writer and singer, Scott Garred, tells a lovely little story about his grandparents’ relationship, specifically about them collecting rocks.

On my birthday that year I came home to find that Melinda had gathered a number of decorative rocks, written the song’s refrain on them (one word per rock) and laid them out in our house for me to find. We keep the rocks in a bowl in our bedroom, a tribute to our relationship.

And without a doubt, we know what “our” song is.

12 February 2013 : Captain Kangaroo

When I was a kid I was a huge fan of Captain Kangaroo. Captain KangarooRemember his TV show with its cast of characters? Dancing Bear, Mr. Bunny Rabbit, Mr. Green Jeans, among others. This was the end-all of TV shows for me.

For Halloween one year, my mom made Captain Kangaroo character costumes for my two brothers and me. I’m in the center of the photo, outfitted as Mr. Bunny Rabbit. That’s my oldest brother Scott on the right, dressed as the captain. And Steve is on the left, dressed as Dancing Bear. The costumes were so wonderful that we won a contest of some sort at a store called Hinky Dinky (I think).

Part of my costume included real carrots. Although I don’t remember this specifically, the story of me sleeping with the carrots remains family lore. Apparently, unbeknownst to me, my mother would change the carrots when they got too rubbery.

11 February 2013 : So Sweet

First, today’s picture is of Chloe and is from many, many years ago. So SweetShe must have been three or four years old and she’d fallen from a swing. She wasn’t really hurt, but she thought she might be so she was crying. She was looking to me for reassurance, which I provided her.

If you look close you can see that Chloe is just starting to smile and that there are a couple of tears on her cheek and another in her eye. I had a camera with me (per usual) and snapped this picture. It’s one of my all-time favorites.

Chloe is almost 20 years-old now, an adult in college. She and I share with each other special stories of being moved by young children. Over the weekend, she sent me this video link. Go take a look (and pardon the fact you have to sit through a 30 second commercial to see a 45 second video).

How cool is it that my adult child shares with me something as sweet as this? 🙂

10 February 2013 : Tom Waits

Tom WaitsIf you known me well at all, you are aware that I am a huge fan of musician Tom Waits. I’ve told my kids that should I ever die, I would like them to see to it that his song “Take It With Me” is played at any service they might decide to have for me.

I’m thinking of Tom Waits today for two reasons. One, one of Melinda’s and my favorite PSCS alums, Dan Gillmore, came to dinner tonight with his girlfriend, Christine. And two, I referenced Tom in an essay I presented this morning in my ongoing kindness class.

It’s a good essay. You really should go read it.

9 February 2013 : Moss Be Gone

There she is, Melinda on the roof. Melinda on the RoofWe stopped by Costco today and one thing we picked up was this product you sprinkle on the ridges of your roof. Once it rains, the product mixes with the rainwater and washes over your roof, supposedly killing any moss that’s been growing. And since moss has been growing on our roof, and bothering Melinda I should add, we bought some of it.

I took several pictures of Melinda applying the product but settled on using this one. In a couple of others she is walking the ridge line of the roof in a way that turned my knees to jelly.

I didn’t want to do that to you.

8 February 2013 : Snow the Goat

Here’s a picture of Stephanie, our niece, with her goat. Stephanie & SnowThe picture was taken in Spain, from where Stephanie recently returned after spending a month. Stephanie has spent much of the last couple of years in Spain teaching English and being happy.

Being happy is a good thing.

Stephanie prefers teaching English in Spain to working in a cubicle in the United States.

Again, being happy is a good thing.

Anyway, Stephanie was visiting a good friend in Spain when several goats were born. She got to name this one. The goat is all white. Stephanie named her Snow.

This reminds me of hearing about Melinda’s childhood dog, an Irish Setter. It’s name? Red.

People can be so creative!

7 February 2013 : Portraits

I’ve long gotten a kick at how kids draw pictures of me. For instance, today’s image. It was drawn by one of my students many years ago, Andy, circa 1992back when I was a teacher at The Little School (this means it was way back last century, probably in or around 1992). I don’t remember the circumstances surrounding the drawing, but I do remember asking the 10 or 11 year-old artist if I could have the picture. I think she was flattered that I wanted it.

A year or two after PSCS got started, probably in 1995 or 1996, I was making my first personal webpage and included this picture of me on it. And, say, want to know one more thing that I love about it? A few days before it was drawn I was playing basketball and had taken an elbow in the eye, giving me a shiner. The young artist even included a hint of that black eye in her drawing. See it?

6 February 2013 : Omaha, Nebraska

TV Dinners!Like me, you probably recently visited and read the Wikipedia entry for Omaha, Nebraska. There, you learned that the TV dinner was developed in Omaha. Learning that, you likely took some pride in the fact that you were born there.

What? You were born in Omaha? So was I!

Like me, were you also pleased to learn that the Reuben sandwich was conceived by a chef in Omaha?

Were you at all disturbed that the verb “conceived” was used to refer to the creation of a sandwich?

I was.
